I am obsessed with this book! I love love love it. Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the odds is the truly astonishing life story of the elite ultramarathon runner, Navy Seal, Army Ranger and Air Force Tactical Instructor, Mr. David Goggins 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️. This man is a true embodiment of the phrase “impossible is nothing” and “don’t stop when you are tired, stop when you are done”. This is a story of a guy who refused to give up….. ever! Reading it makes you feel like you can literally do anything you put your mind to once you are willing to put in the work. My rating for this book is 5 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. It is a truly motivational and inspirational story and a special thank you to my friend Victoria for recommending this book 😄
This book was much more than a book about an amazing runner or all the many accomplishments of Mr. Goggins. The focus for me was more on how he was able to achieve what he achieved, how did he become an Army Ranger or run his first 100 mile race or teach himself to read and retain information. What I learned from the book and the story of Mr. Goggins is that at the end of the day, it all comes down to the power of your mind 🤯and your ability to push through the pain 😥. It is about “callousing your mind 🧠” so that you can become a person who does not quit when the going gets tough💪. Mr. Goggins excelled at pushing past both physical and mental barriers and reaching and riding that second wave of inspiration and energy, which comes after you get over your initially feelings of wanting to quit.
If you feel like your life is in a bit of rut, in your personal life, your career or you don’t feel to exercise, I think this book will help you to jump-start your life and begin the journey to become the best version of yourself. This story shows that we as human beings have limitless potential, but we need to push past the uncomfortable moments to become all that we can be 🙏😚.
Here are a few of my favorite quotes:
“Set goals that scare you and don’t be afraid of failure” : You really never know what you can can achieve until you try. David Goggins wanted to break the world pull ups record and tried and failed two times before achieving this goal 💪.
“Be accountable for yourself” : You are the only person who knows how tired you truly are, if you need to quit or not or if you can overcome that voice in your head telling you to quit and instead push through to ride that second wave of energy 😪.
“Remember your achievements” : There comes a time especially during a long run, or when you are in the midst of a difficult situation in work or in your personal life when you being to wonder Why am I doing this? In times like this you need to have a strong mind to remember why you started in the first place and why you want to see this through 🙂.
My main critique is that I found Mr Goggins didn’t take the time to celebrate his accomplishments in the moment and also he did not rest enough hence he suffered from so many injuries (he addressed these points at the end of this book). I think yes, it is important to give your all and work hard but it is also important to celebrate your small victories. Celebrate the small wins and also the big ones🥂.
