Book Review: The Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes

Honestly this book had me from Hello! It just felt so effortless and conversational, I really felt like i was talking with my good friend Shonda Rhimes about some of her life experiences over a hot cup of Lipton tea with some chocolate cupcakes. I love books like this, it was love at first page! (If that’s a thing!) My rating is 5/5 for this book and my advice to you is GET THIS BOOK and read it, you will thank me later ❀

I was engrossed in this book, I smiled, I laughed, I pondered my own life and my past because of this book. Maybe it is because i understand and can relate to her struggles (with public speaking, weight loss, friendships and confidence for example)Β  or maybe it was her style of writing, which was so relaxed and friendly or maybe it was the fact that some of the big events that she mentions for example The Dartmouth Commencement Speech (Her first big yes!) can be viewed on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuHQ6TH60_I&t=164s), but there was something about this book that struck a cord with me, there was something about this book that I absolutely enjoyed πŸ˜€

Recently I have found myself still reading a lot of self help books but more and more I am drawn to biography type self help books πŸ˜‰Β  Books where persons talk about their own life experiences, their highs and lows, what they have been through and what they have done to overcome their challenges and what they have learned. This is the reason I enjoyed Trevor Noah’s book “Born a Crime”Β so much, and Michele Obama’s book “Becoming”Β and also Mark Manson’s book The Subtle Art of not giving a F*** (you can check out my blog posts on these other books). I relish reading these types of personal development books and The Year of Yes was one of the best ones that I have read thus far ❀

Some of my favorite quotes from this book include:

⭐ I am only just beginning to understand that the very act of saying yes is not just life-changing, it is life saving.

⭐ No is a complete sentence.

⭐ Because it’s not merely about surrounding myself with people who treat me well. It’s also about surrounding myself with people whose self-worth, self-respect and values inspire me to elevate my own behavior. …I want Ride or Dies who make me want to be a better person.

So say Yes to new opportunities, say yes to becoming a better person, say yes to things that you are scared of doing, say yes to things that challenge you, say yes to difficult conversations. …. say yes to reading this book πŸ™‚

Much Love
