A waterfall in Diego Martin?

The stunning Blue Basins Waterfall

What is this beautiful waterfall doing hidden in the residential area of Blue Basins, Diego Martin? That was the first thought that passed through my mind when after work a couple of Fridays ago, I visited this hidden gem on the west coast of Trinidad โค

The starting point for the hike to the waterfall is at the end of the Blue Basin Road. You can park next to the small park at the bottom of the hill.

When we arrived there, there were some kids from the area bathing in a large emerald green pool ๐Ÿ˜ฎ and I was tempted to stay there and just jump in, but we decided to try and find the waterfall first. The kids told us we could access the waterfall either by hiking up river or by walking up the hill and following a short trail to the waterfall. We took the second option ๐Ÿ˜Ž

The trail was short but scenic (about 12 mins walking) with about a 5 mins walk uphill trek and before you know it, before you even began to sweat, you arrive at the waterfall.

The trail

When I first laid eyes on the Blue Basin Waterfall, I was shocked and surprised that such a place even existed in the back of Diego Martin. It feels like an oasis in your backyard. At the base of the falls is a large emerald green pool which gradually deepens towards the center. The water is cold and refreshing ๐Ÿ˜€

Although it is a very easy hike, and I prefer the exercise from a longer more challenging trail, the Blue Basin waterfall is worth it and I see myself going back there quite often. It is the perfect spot for a relaxing evening.

On the way back, although we had slippers on, we decided to be adventurous and followed the river back down to where we parked our car instead of using the trail. While this took a little longer, it was a lot of fun (climbing over rocks, walking through the river and dodging random spiders) o_O

Like many other places in Trinidad these days, I am well aware that safety could be an issue when visiting this waterfall so I advise that you always visit this waterfall in groups and during the day. I don’t think this is the place for a 5:30 am solo hike.

Have you been to Blue Basin waterfall? Maybe you should add this to your list of places to visit in Trinidad โค

Much Love,

Celly
